Prayers and Squares

The Prayers and Squares team provides lap-sized quilts which are hand-tied by the congregation with prayers of love offered to someone in a crisis or with a special prayer need. Our motto is: "It's not about the Quilt; it's all about the Prayers." The Aldersgate group is aligned with the national organization at http://www.prayerquilt.org.

What is a prayer quilt?

  • A lap-sized cover, hand-tied with a square knot.
  • A statement of our faith in God and our belief in His power to comfort, strengthen, and heal.
  • As each knot is tied, a prayer is offered for the person to receive the quilt. When fully tied, the quilt is given as a gift of love and prayer.

Who may receive a prayer quilt?

Anyone who is experiencing a special need for prayer may receive a quilt when they are sponsored by someone attending Aldersgate UMC.

Who makes the prayer quilt?

Individuals who are committed to sharing the burden of others through prayer and the giving of hand-tied quilts. The prayer quilt team meets to work on quilts in progress, to receive instruction and help, and for encouragement, fellowship, and prayer.

How do you become a sponsor?

  1. Ask the proposed recipient if he/she would like to receive a prayer quilt. If the person doesn't know about prayer quilts, please explain the ministry. (See "What is a prayer quilt?" above.)
  2. If the person agrees to receive a prayer quilt, ask what prayers he/she wants offered, such as healing, patience, strength, guidance.
  3. Contact Cassie Cuthbert or Joan Everett with your information. A quilt will be made with love and tied with prayer-knots.
  4. You (the sponsor) will be notified when the quilt is ready for you to pick up and deliver to the person.
  5. The prayer quilt is a gift. There is no financial obligation for the sponsor.
